Stress Management – It’s time to tackle public enemy No.1

It may sound strange but at Transformative we’re all about the Stress! It will come as no surprise that for more and more individuals and organisations, stress management is becoming a top priority.

We have two million year old brains, and we have the same response to stress in the modern day workplace, classroom or home as we would have had when fleeing from a sabre-tooth tiger!

But we are not designed to live in a constant state of stress. If you are running from a sabre-tooth tiger, how much of your available resources would you want to put into that effort… 100% of course! We are designed to put everything into that fight for survival… Amongst other things, the stress hormones coursing through our veins shut down our immune system and divert resources away from our digestive system (we will only need those if we survive). They direct all available oxygen and energy to our muscles and away from our brains and other organs in order to run or fight.

Our minds and bodies are designed to respond dramatically to short stressful events and either to survive them or not. If we subject ourselves to prolonged stressful situations, the effect on us can be devastating.

We are only just beginning to understand the full extent of the damage caused to the mind and body when we experience prolonged stress… Research tells us that the stress hormone, cortisol, has now become Enemy No.1… Scientists have known for years that prolonged elevation of cortisol levels interferes with learning and memory, lowers immune function and bone density, causes weight gain, increases blood pressure and he risk of heart disease and can cause serious mental conditions such as anxiety, panic attacks and depression… But the list goes on and on… Stress has far too many potential negative consequences to cover here.

So, what can we do to address the epidemic of stress in our modern lives?

At Transformative we have developed a unique stress management programme that focusses on three core areas in order to reduce stress and restore balance and harmony in our minds and bodies:

  1. Physical – We look at the relationship between food, exercise and stress and how foods can create more stress or alleviate it and how the right amount of movement and exercise for you can positively affect your mind, body, and spirit.
  2. Mental – We look at how we can be programmed to find particular situations (often unique to us!) stressful, why we are programmed this way and how to change that mental programming.
  3. Practical – We look at healthy habits that reduce stress in daily life, whether in the workplace, classroom or at home.

We work with teams or one-to-one and we tailor our Stress Management programmes to the teams or individuals we are working with. After all, everybody is physically and mentally different and everyone has different stress triggers.

FAQs

How does our Stress Management programme work?
Like our other Corporate Wellness Programmes, the Stress Management Plan is tailor-made for you or for your organisation. The first step is to have a call or meeting assess your team’s needs. We will then submit a proposal for the approach, duration, content and cost of your personalised programme.

What is the time commitment?
We offer full or half-day workshops as part of our Stress Management offering and then optional follow-up sessions which could take the form of either in-depth, one-to-one sessions with those seriously affected or shorter one-to-one online check-in sessions with those happy to run with the personalised plan developed during the workshop.
